Maximum possible gain for an arbitrary ideal antenna with specified quality factor
Abstract
Analytical and universally applicable numerical results are obtained for the maximum possible gain achievable by an ideal antenna for which the size and quality factor Q are specified. It is found that the maximum possible value of G/Q, where G is the gain, that could ever be achieved (with the best possible antenna design) is approximately 20. The utility of this result is that, for a specified antenna size, it makes it possible to trade off maximum possible gain vs the antenna quality factor in a quantitative manner.
