Plasma dynamics in current sheets. I - Linear regimes of current sheet formation. II - Nonlinear regimes of current sheet formation
Abstract
Plasma dynamics at the successive stages of current sheet evolution was investigated experimentally by analyzing spatial-temporal changes in electron concentration and electrodynamic force fields. In the experiments, a current sheet was formed in a two-dimensional magnetic field with a zero line using relatively small initial perturbations (linear regimes) and initial perturbations with a relative level of the order of unity at the plasma boundary (nonlinear regimes). It is found that the formation of current sheets is a universal property of magnetic configurations with X-type zero lines. The parameters and characteristic features of the evolution of current sheets formed in linear and nonlinear regimes are compared.
