Singular vortices on the beta plane
Abstract
A novel theory of singular vortices is developed for geostrophic beta-plane dynamics. These vortices are not necessarily point vortices, and they generate a regular velocity field in addition to the field guided by the vortices themselves. A system of equations describing the joint evolution of a set of vortices together with the regular component is derived. An integral of motion for this system is found and investigated. The initial evolution of a separate singular vortex is studied in the rigid lid approximation.
