New determination of the rate constant for the reaction CH4 + OH and its atmospheric implications
Abstract
A lower value by 25 percent of the rate constant for the reaction CH4 + OH has been confirmed by measurements at two temperatures (378 and 422 K) under experimental conditions where the fast secondary reaction between CH3 and OH is kept negligible. This result implies a 25-percent increase in the tropospheric lifetime of methane as well as a reduction in the estimated emission fluxes.
