Research of the polar middle and lower atmosphere with an MST radar on Spitsbergen (Svalbard, Arctic)
Abstract
Research directions to studying the Arctic Mesosphere Stratosphere and Troposphere (MST) with radar are described. These are effects of Joule heating and high energy particle precipitation on the mesosphere. Possible influences in the dynamics and chemistry of the middle atmosphere are pointed out. The stratospheric fine structure, as seen by radar, is discussed and similarities to ozone layer structures indicated. Vertical transport, the structure and dynamics of tropopause folding, polar stratospheric clouds, gravity wave breaking and momentum deposition as well as turbulence, investigated by radar, are discussed. Certain tropospheric phenomena, such as polar lows, can also be studied by an MST radar. Instrumental specifications, which should be fulfilled for a polar MST radar and which would not add substantial costs to the total investment, are outlined.
