Some Reminiscences of the CWI Atmospheric Neutrino Experiment
Abstract
In early 1963 great excitement gripped Fred Reines' "Neutrino Group" at the Case Institute of Technology. Fred recognized that a Ph.D. thesis by P.V. Ramana Murthy of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, showed that at depths attainable in the mines of the Kolar Gold Fields in Southern India it might be possible for him and his group to carry out an experiment of which he had long dreamed. At the deepest location studied, a fairly large detector in the Indian mine had recorded no counts during a period of 180 days. This showed that the attenuation of the cosmic-ray flux was sufficient to attempt detection of neutrinos produced in the atmosphere by the primary cosmic rays…
