Numerical simulation of inhomogeneous turbulence and its statistical analysis
Abstract
The atmospheric geostrophic turbulence was numerically simulated by using quasi-geostrophic equations under beta-plane approximation. Then Karhunen-Loeve expansion was utilized, which decomposes inhomogeneous turbulent fields into characteristic functions and their corresponding stochastic amplitudes to a set of obtained data of the turbulent vorticity field. They turned out to consist of several kinds of energetic eddying motions accompanied by a strong jet stream.
