Morphological aspects of surface reactions
Abstract
A number of experimental studies, including the first detailed Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) study of thermal facteing of TiO2(001), the production of surface vinyl groups in spectroscopically characterizable concentrations, and the photon driven chemistry of adsorbed SO2 are described. We plan to examine the structure of Rh on faceted and unfaceted TiO2 using, among other surface science tools, our custom Ultrahigh Vacuum STM. We also plan to investigate nonthermal methods for activation of adsorbates, e.g., via electrons and photons, with one specific goal being the clean production of catalytically interesting intermediates, e.g., CH2Cl, CH2, i-propyl, hexyl, and phenyl.
