Adsorbate induced surface reconstruction
Abstract
An absorbate induced surface reconstruction on W(100) surface is discussed. This surface is known to exhibit a spontaneous reversible reconstruction of the surface layer as a function of temperature. The calculations show that there exists an additional order-order transition in the system as the amount of adsorbate is increased. Mean field calculations and Monte Carlo results for the phase diagram are presented. This order-order transition is of first order at low temperatures and of second order at higher temperatures. The transition and its order are explained in terms of an XY model with four fold and eight fold anisotropy fields.
