Low frequency strategy for VIRGO, the French-Italian interferometric gravitational wave antenna.
Abstract
Long arms interferometric gravitational wave antennas are planned all over the world. The French-Italian antenna is designed in order to detect Gravitational Waves in a wide frequency range from 10 Hz to few kHz. The antenna is a high sensitivity interferometer with 3 km arms and the 10 Hz region is achievable by means of ad-hoc suspensions (called Super-Attenuator, SA), for the optical components, in order to reduce the seismic noise. The SA's measurements have shown that the suspension is adequate to reduce the seism well below other noise sources.
