Conditional expectations in the evaluation of fault-tolerant systems
Abstract
In view of the extent to which the mean time to failure (MTTF) measure of systems can be misleading when applied to redundancy-including designs, attention is given to the concept of 'conditional expectations' for the comparison of fault-tolerant designs. MTTF is shown to be a specific instance of a more general conditional-expectation function. Two illustrative examples are considered in detail. The conditional expectations measure can be used to create several single-number measures of system quality by properly partitioning the time axis.
