Near field computation of rocket exhaust flow
Abstract
The interaction of a rocket exhaust with the free stream produces an extremely complex flowfield which includes shock/shock interaction and flow separation within the near field zone. One of the primary interests is the computation of heat transfer around the vehicle. In particular, the possible hot spots at the afterbody section from hot exhaust gases moving forward due to under expansion or flow separation. The prediction of such a highly complex flowfield by approximate methods is not adequate. Therefore a numerical approach is employed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations with the effect of equilibrium as well as nonequilibrium chemistry.
