TALON and CRADLE - Systems for the rescue of tumbling spacecraft and astronauts
Abstract
TALON (Tumble Arresting Large Oscillation Nullifier), a device capable of capturing a target in an uncontrolled three-axis tumble, and CRADLE (Concentric Rotating Astronaut Detumble Lifesaving Equipment), a device for rescuing a suited astronaut, are discussed. The physical nature of the tumbling problem is reviewed and the TALON/CRADLE system is described. A detailed examination of the way that TALON/CRADLE calculates the target motions and make appropriate adjustments is given.
