Tests of the performance of different gas mixtures in microstrip gas counters
Abstract
Measurements of the electron drift and diffusion parameters in gas mixtures, suited for application in a microstrip gas counter are described. The aim was to optimize for position resolution, detection efficiency and response time. The measurements were done in mixtures of Ar, CF4, C2H6, Xe, CO2 and DME by using a pulsed ultraviolet laser beam. Results from tests in a particle beam for efficiency and position resolution of the counter using the two gases found to be most promising in laser tests. These two gas mixtures are Xe/DME/CO2 30/30/40 and DME/CO2 60/40.
