Solid-state noise sources at mm-waves - Theory and experiment
Abstract
The use of avalanche diode noise sources at millimeter wavelengths as an alternative to gas discharge noise tubes is examined. The noise theory is briefly reviewed, and some workable configurations are presented along with experimental results for IMPATT-mounted waveguide cavities in the 26.5-70 GHz frequency range. Out of the three possible waveguide mounts tested, the RH-RH configuration is found to provide the optimum noise characteristics both in flatness and noise power output.
