The Elektron instrumentation complex for active experiments with electron-beam injection
Abstract
A description is given of the Elektron instrumentation complex which is designed for active experiments with electron-beam injection from spacecraft. The complex has three distinguishing characteristics: (1) the use of an injector with a high-perveance electron gun (0.7 mkA/V exp 3/2) and with beam modulation in the LF and HF ranges with the aim of exciting wave processes in the ionospheric plasma; (2) the use of three autonomous diagnostic containers, two of which are separated in opposite directions perpendicular to the axis of the rocket, while the third is separated along the rocket axis; and (3) the use of a data acquisition/distribution unit which assures the recording of high-speed processes with a time resolution of several microsec on 20 measurement channels and storage of information with subsequent transmission, with the aim of preserving the data in the case of possible failures of the telemetry during beam injection.
