Charge exchange and the 'plateau' effect in YBa2Cu3O(7-y)
Abstract
A theory is advanced that addresses at the microscopic level the 'plateau' effect in YBa2Cu3O(7-y) (YBCO) describing the constant transition temperature Tc at oxygen contents of between 6.8 and 7.0. The analytic expressions for YBCO are reviewed, and a novel equation for Tc is derived in which there are two competitive channels for Tc. It is shown that experimental measurements can be used to obtain the Tc and its relation to oxygen content. The microscopic explanation of the 'plateau' effect is based on the interplay of two charge-exchange channels that affect Tc in opposing ways.
