Thermospheric and ionospheric dynamics; Symposium, Exeter, England, July, 1989, Selected Papers
Abstract
The present conference on thermospheric and ionospheric dynamics encompasses the study of ionospheric and thermospheric behavior in the presence of high-latitude disturbances, ionospheric studies at auroral and subauroral latitudes, simulations of F-region storms with a coupled global circulation model, measurements of the disturbed ionosphere, traveling ionospheric disturbances, and results from incoherent scatter radars. Specific issues addressed include vertical thermospheric winds at the equatorward edge of the auroral oval, results of OI 630-nm dayglow measurements at equatorial latitudes, models of composition changes during F-region storms, and the identification and occurrence of ion frictional heating events in the high-latitude ionosphere. Also addressed are the effects of large zonal plasma drifts on the subauroral ionosphere, periodic behavior, the effect of seismic activity on F2-layer critical frequencies, and disturbances of F-region electron density following solar terminator.
