Shock wave front distortion in a shock tube with an expanding conical adapter
Abstract
The shock wave front profile in a gas was investigated experimentally in shock tubes of variable cross section. It is shown that the presence of a conical adapter between the low-pressure and high-pressure chambers prolongs the existence of inhomogeneities on the wave front surface (e.g., slopes, curvatures, and bends), which persist over a length of 20-30 gauges.
