Field line tracing in a realistic magnetosphere
Abstract
The numerical model of Tsyganenko (1981) and the empirical model of Mead and Fairfield (1975) are used for tracing field lines in the magnetosphere. It is found that nondipolar distortions become important at large distances beyond 7 earth radii. It is also demonstrated that these distortions are extremely model dependent, making the choice of a model a critical factor in understanding certain magnetospheric phenomena.
