Quasi-linear relaxation dynamics of fast particles in plasma in the presence of particle and wave sources and sinks
Abstract
The characteristics of the quasi-linear relaxation of fast particles in plasma are examined for the case where the fast particle supply rate (due to injection or acceleration) is comparable to the wave attenuation decrement. In the one-dimensional approximation, the dynamics of the system consists of achieving steady state within a period of time equal to several characteristic times of fast particle accumulation. Under certain conditions, the establishment of steady state is accompanied by relaxation oscillations of the wave energy density. In the case of an inhomogeneous medium or a multidimensional phase space, an instability leading to self-oscillatory wave generation is possible.
