Elasticity and microplastic deformation of orthorhombic and tetragonal modifications of YBa2Cu3O(x) ceramic
Abstract
Changes in the static Young modulus and characteristics of plastic deformation of YBa2Cu3O(x) ceramic were investigated experimentally during the transition from the orthorhombic (twinning) to the tetragonal (nontwinning) modification. The transition was achieved by changing the oxygen index x without any significant changes in the density and grain structure of the specimens. It is found that the mechanical hysteresis observed in the ceramic specimens under cyclic loading is more pronounced in the orthorhombic phase, which may be ascribed to irreversible deformation during the evolution of mechanical twins. Measurements of the static Young modulus and ultimate strength of the ceramic specimens are presented.
