Non-LTE models of H-alpha emission from accretion disks in nondegenerate eclipsing binaries.
Abstract
Evidence is summarized for the existence of rotating accretion disks in some long-period nondegenerate eclipsing binary systems. These disks are optically thin in all continua except the Lyman. An accretion-disk model which predicts the emission-line profile of H-alpha, including approximations for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium, is described. Effects of pressure and kinetic temperature variations, departures from Keplerian rotation, disk partial eclipses by the cool star, and microturbulence on emitted profiles are briefly discussed.
