Experimental studies of a helical axis stellarator (TU-Heliac)
Abstract
The recent experimental results are presented on TU-Heliac. TU-Heliac is a helical axis stellarator of heliac type and was built at Sendai in July 1988. The device description is given elsewhere. TU-Heliac has 4 periods, 48 cm of major radius, maximum toroidal field of 3.5 kG, and an average plasma radius of 6 to 8 cm. The swing radius of TF coil is 8 cm. The topics presented deal with measurements of the vacuum magnetic surfaces of TU-Heliac by three different kinds of electron beam methods, and measurements of 2-D contour of the plasma pressure to ensure the existence of the plasma equilibrium in a heliac and brief analytical calculation of the toroidal heliac equilibria.
