Lecture notes on nonlinear inversion and tomography
Abstract
The main topic of these lectures is seismic traveltime tomography in 2D and 3D heterogeneous media. The main problem is to infer the (isotropic) Pwave slowness (reciprocal velocity) distribution of a medium, given a set of observed firstarrival traveltimes between sources and receivers of known location within the medium. This problem is typical of boreholetoborehole seismic tomography in oil field applications. The problem is considered of inverting for wave slowness when the absolute traveltimes are not known, as is expected to be the case in earthquake seismology.
