Lecture notes on nonlinear inversion and tomography
Abstract
The main topic of these lectures is seismic traveltime tomography in 2-D and 3-D heterogeneous media. The main problem is to infer the (isotropic) P-wave slowness (reciprocal velocity) distribution of a medium, given a set of observed first-arrival traveltimes between sources and receivers of known location within the medium. This problem is typical of borehole-to-borehole seismic tomography in oil field applications. The problem is considered of inverting for wave slowness when the absolute traveltimes are not known, as is expected to be the case in earthquake seismology.
