The use of microcrack analysis in performance simulation for composite material systems
Abstract
The interpretation of the consequences of microcracking is extended to the long-term performance regime. Particular emphasis is placed on the effect of microcracking in notched and unnotched laminates and short-fiber ceramic matrix composites on the evolution of stiffness and strength. Attention is given to the interpretation of the effects of matrix cracking, such as stress relaxation around notches and impact damage, in terms of the prediction of remaining strength with existing performance simulation codes such as the MRLife series.
