Achievements of magnetospheric research
Abstract
Achievements of magnetospheric research, which are of major importance not only for the field itself but also from a basic plasma physics or general astrophysics point of view, are reviewed. Examples of such achievements are presented and discussed from the following fields: the Van Allen belts, collisionless shocks, cellular structure of the solar system, interaction at the magnetopause, electron acceleration into the atmosphere, macroscopic instabilities in magnetospheres, interaction between hot and cold magnetospheric plasmas, and wave-particle interactions.
