Scalar reflectance
Abstract
The scalar theory of radiometry is extended in this study to a vector-matrix form, and emphasis is placed on the bidirectional reflectance and BRDF matrices. The emergent polarized flux and incidence flux on the target are described equivalently in terms of the reflectance and BRDF matrices. Only bidirectional and biconical irradiation geometries are considered. While in most scattering experiments the reflectance is treated as a scalar number, the study relates it to a combination of reflectance-matrix components depending on the polarization states of the polarizer and analyzer. It is also shown that the reflectance and BRDF are the functions of the angles of incidence and observation.
