The Aussat satellite system
Abstract
Aussat was established by the Australian government to provide satellite communications services to Australia. The current satellite system, which consists of three spacecraft and associated ground equipment, has been providing communications to customers since late 1985. The first of these three satellites is due to cease services in December 1992 due to depletion of the stationkeeping fuel. A replacement satellite system has been planned, and launch vehicle suppliers selected with the replacement spacecraft due for launch in 1991 and 1992. This paper describes the present system, the services provided and the procurement of the second generation system.
