Ionospheric storms at the mid-latitude European sector - A statistical and theoretical study
Abstract
A statistical analysis is conducted to determine the performance of selection criteria for ionospheric storms based on data from five European stations. Numerical modeling indicates that the negative phase of a summer storm relates to an enrichment of molecular constituents by a factor of about 2; the positive nocturnal phase is correlated with downward plasmaspheric fluxes. The average behaviors of ionospheric storms are statistically determined to be consistent when prestorm conditions are quiet.
