Waverider aerodynamic study programme - Amateur research in Scotland
Abstract
Waverider research carried out by ASTRA (Association in Scotland to Research into Astronautics), including its participation in the JPL Starprobe study, is reviewed with emphasis on contributions by amateur groups. In particular, attention is given to early caret wing versions, emphasizing the reduction in low-speed drag, optimization of airframe volume, and integration of control surfaces. The inclusion of external burning and oxygen scavenging is then explored. A combined external burn surface/rocket engine has been incorporated into the shuttle variant with a view to utilizing the system to achieve orbit from an air launch.
