Status of the Canadian military Multibeam Antenna (MBA) development for EHF SATCOM
Abstract
In support of ongoing research on extremely high frequency military satellite communications, exploratory development work is being conducted on multibeam antennas for use on board satellites having Canada-wide coverage. The emphasis is on receive antennas that possess narrow beams, fast beam hopping, and low sidelobes for rejection of interference outside the beam area. To attain the stringent specifications required, a number of approaches were considered. A method of combining seven adjacent beams into one composite beam was found to be the best way to meet the specifications. This method uses a single aperture (lens or reflector) and standard focusing but combines a septet of adjacent beams (or horns). Among the focusing configurations studied, it was found that the single offset reflector gave the best results.
