Randomness as unpredictability - The concept of partial determinism
Abstract
The randomness and determinism of physical phenomena are examined in the framework of the theory of partial determinism which is based on the convention of denoting randomness or determinism by the unpredictability or predictability of the observed process on the basis of a specified model or class of models. According to this convention, one and the same observed process can be random (or unpredictable) with respect to one model and deterministic (or predictable) with respect to another. This approach explains why, over fixed intervals of time, certain complex physical systems admit both a deterministic and a kinetic description.
