Phase diagram of the inelastic instability of icosahedral quasi-crystals
Abstract
An analysis is made of the expansion of the elastic energy of icosahedral quasi-crystals in terms of phonon shifts. It is shown that the corresponding Ginsburg-Landau functional describes a phase transition of the first kind with a symmetry reduction to pentagonal or triangular. The phase diagram is plotted.
