Electronic excitation in low-energy electron scattering by N2 molecules
Abstract
Results are presented from a study of electronic excitation of the N2 molecule by low-energy electrons. In this study, the fixed nuclei R-matrix approach was adapted, with the internuclear separation chosen to be R = 2.068 a(0). Integrated cross sections for the electronic excitation from the ground state X 1Sigma-g(+) to the valence excited states A 3Sigma-u(+), B 3Pi-g, and W 3Delta-u are presented and compared with the available experimental data, showing a good agreement between calculated values and experiment for the X-A and X-W transitions, but not for the X-B transition.
