Growth of CuZnAl and CuAlNi single crystals with shape memory martensites
Abstract
This paper reports the growth of CuZnAl and CuAlNi single crystals by Bridgman technique. Different rates of ampoule lowering ranging from 5 to 10 mm/h were used and it has been observed that good quality large crystals having more than 18 mm diameter and 75 mm length could be grown at a rate of 7.2 mm/h. The composition of the growth crystals were uniform and were determined to be CuZn 14.03Al 8.56 and CuAl 14.53Ni 4.2 (wt%). In order to characterize the shape memory effect, it has been supplemented by microstructure.
