Key data on participating projects: The solar-terrestrial science project of the Inter-Agency Consultative Group for Space Science (IACG)
Abstract
The scientific objectives, payloads, and key spacecraft and mission or orbit data for each project are given with a drawing of each spacecraft and a plot of its orbit. Among the missions included are: (1) the Geotail mission, whose objective is to study the dynamics of the Earth magnetotail over a wide range of distances extending from the near Earth region to the distant tail; (2) the Wind mission, whose objective is to investigate solar wind input properties such as plasma waves on energetic particles; (3) the Polar mission, whose objective is to investigate energy input to the ionospheric region through the dayside cusp and to study the characteristics of the auroral plasma acceleration regions; and (4) the Galileo mission, whose objective is to investigate the chemical composition and physical state of Jupiter atmosphere.
