[Comment on ““AGU advocacy for science” by H. Frank Eden” and “Fencing Position” by G. Shaw, et al.] Ambivalence
Abstract
The April 10, 1990, issue of Eos illustrated the ethical ambivalence of our times. The article on AGU advocacy for science laments that scientists are being “out-lobbied” and urges AGU scientists to “become familiar with the interests of your local representatives, your senators and their staff… pay close attention to critical points in the fast changing budget process… and recommend specific actions to your congressional delegation … ”A few pages later, the article on AGU's fencing position cautions us that Congress should continue to make its funding decisions “on scientific, not political considerations”, and scientists should “not be divisive by urging Congress to protect their parts of agency budgets.”
