The physical nature of island-arc volcanism
Abstract
A model for island-arc volcanism is presented according to which the lifting of magma from the generation zone to the surface occurs under the effect of a stable expelling pressure gradient induced by the redistribution of external tectonic loads. It is suggested that the observed localization of the heat source and the geometry of the region of the high expelling gradient can explain the generation of island-arc volcanic zones and their typical location.
