The stability of Euler and Lagrange gyro with damping torque in a central gravitational field
Abstract
The motion stability of Euler and Lagrange gyros with damping in a central force field is studied. The results are compared with the stability conditions of the same gyros which were obtained in a uniform gravitational field. It is concluded that, in a Newtonian central force field, the rotation of a Euler gyro with a linear damping torque is stable in finite time about the longest principal axis of inertia just as in a uniform gravitational field.
