Measurement of the distribution functions and composition of the charged particles in space plasmas
Abstract
A sensor for simultaneous measurements of 3-D ion and electron distributions is presented. The sensor consists of two quadrispherical electrostatic devices and ensures uniform velocity space coverage. The m/q ratio can be varied by four cross-field velocity analyzers which can also measure the composition of different space plasmas at high mass resolution. The detection of charged particles is carried out by chevron-pair microchannel plates, discrete collectors, and conventional counting chains.
