Isotropic terrestrial kilometric radiation - A new component of the earth's radio emission
Abstract
The source and the mechanisms of a newly discovered component of the earth's radio emission, named isotropic terrestrial kilometric radiation (ITKR), are investigated. It is shown that the ITKR events occur at times of intense magnetospheric substorms. Based on the analysis of 79 events recorded between 1978 and 1984 by radio astronomy instruments on ISEE-3, statistical information on ITKR was derived. It is shown that scattering on the density inhomogeneities of the solar wind could control some of the ITKR characteristics.
