Effects of perturbation phase differences on the large scale coherent structures in free shear layer
Abstract
The phase differences between perturbation waves of different frequencies can affect the development of the large scale coherent structures in free shear layer. Numerical solutions are presented for various phase differences between a fundamental wave and its first subharmonic. It is found that the large scale structures develop in the manner of vortex merging or vortex splitting and that the spreading rate of the momentum thickness of the layer changes at different phase differences.
