Interaction of RBa2Cu3O(x) (R = Y or Nd) coatings with alumina and zirconia substrates
Abstract
The present study of the interactions of RBa2Cu3O(x) coatings with alumina and zirconia substrates, where R may be either Y or Nd, used XRD, EDAX, and resistivity measurements to ascertain the modifications of coating electrical properties and microstructure. It is established that coating degradation occurs through the diffusion of Ba atoms out of the coating, leading to the formation of Y2BaCuO5 and CuO in Y-based coatings and to the formation of nonstoichiometric Nd(1+y)Ba(2-y)Cu3O(x) and CuO in Nd-based ones. Coating degradation is more important on Al than Zr substrates for both coating types.
