Companion payload prospects for Atlas launch
Abstract
Options are being studied for the launching of small companion satellites in conjunction with standard sized satellites which permit optimal utilization of Atlas performance capabilities. Attention is given to the case where excess performance capability is employed to deliver one or more companion payloads into low earth orbits or geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). The Atlas launch potential of these generalized categories of small GTO, medium LEO, and multiple small LEO companion payloads. The various combinations of Atlas vehicle types, payload adapters, and fairing sizes creates a wide range of different combinations for companion payload launches. It is shown that Atlas launch systems are possible that ensure the proper operation of the primary GTO satellite, enhance the alternative launch systems for companion payloads, and encourage low-cost access to space for both.
