Tracking antenna systems - Past, present, and future
Abstract
A development history and prospective development trends account is presented for radar tracking antenna designs. The digital beamforming array is identified as the first significant breakthrough in tracking antenna design since the advent of the first monopulse antenna, which in turn represented the most substantial advancement over the SCR 584 'spinner' antenna which began operating for the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1942. Digital beamforming employs state-of-the-art monolithic analog circuitry as well as digital components which interface with powerful signal processing hardware.
