Nonlinear structures in a gas discharge and active medium excitation in high-power gas-discharge molecular lasers
Abstract
Methods of studying the general structural characteristics of gas discharges, irrespective of the specific mechanisms of discharge generation, are reviewed. The discussion covers gas discharge stability; dynamic modes of gas discharge contraction; the effect of a magnetic field on the ionization instabilities of a glow-discharge plasma; nonlinear structures in nonequilibrium systems and self-organization in a gas discharge; and vibrational gas excitation by a contacted glow discharge. The application of the results reviewed here to the excitation of the active medium of molecular gas-discharge lasers is discussed.
