Surface- and Two-Dimensional Plasmon Excitations in Microstructured Metal Films and Semiconductor Heterostructures
Abstract
Plasmon polariton type of excitations exist in widely different systems, e.g., surface plasmons in metal films or two-dimensional (2D) plasmons in semiconductor heterostructures and metal-oxide-semiconductor devices. Lateral microstructures are used as grating couplers to couple plasmons with radiation and, starting from 2D electronic systems, to realize systems of even lower dimensionalities. In this review I will discuss some general aspects for plasmon polariton excitations in electronic systems of different dimensions.
