Kinetic theory of the vibrational relaxation of molecules in gas mixtures
Abstract
An attempt is made to correctly formulate the superposition principle for the relaxation of the vibrational energy of diatomic molecules, modeled by quantum oscillators, in a mixture of ideal gases A + B. The formulation proposed here is based on a kinetic equation and is shown to lead to results that are fully consistent with the definition of complete statistical equilibrium in statistical physics.
