Thermodynamic modeling of the formation of YBa2Cu3O(y)
Abstract
The formation of YBa2Cu3O(y) (1:2:3 phase) is modeled thermodynamically for the atmospheric-pressure synthesis at 400-1500 K from (1) the pure elements; (2) oxides; (3) BaCO3 and copper and yttrium oxides. It is found that, under equilibrium conditions, the 1:2:3 phase can be formed from the pure elements or oxides over the entire temperature range. From BaCO3 and yttrium and copper oxides, YBa2Cu3O(y) is formed in the range 1000-1500 K; in this range, the value of y changes from 7 to 6.15-6.3 as the temperature increases.
